In my last two posts, I gave reasons that I still believe in the gospel of Christ despite no longer believing the Bible as divine. If you want to go back and read those you can find them here.
Today I want to talk about something I hinted about in my first post, a new form of spirituality based on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus rather than on biblical fidelity. I want to relay that I have not figured this out. Part of my spiritual crisis in the last few months (years?) has been figuring out whether or not I am a real disciple of Jesus.
The old answer to this question came in the form of multiple other questions:
- How often do you read the Bible?
- How often do you pray?
- How often do you pray for someone other than yourself?
- How often do you pray for the gospel to reach the heathen in all the less fortunate nations?
- How often do you pray for your leaders whether church officials, politicians (mostly for Republicans and against Democrats), or if you are a kid, your parents?
- How often do you tithe?
- How much do you tithe?
- Do you ever give beyond your tithe? (PBS does not count.)
- How often do you attend regular services?
- How often do you attend extra services?
- Do you attend a small group?
- Do you lead/facilitate a small group?
- Do you lead/facilitate your small group faithfully?
- Do you show up for visitation, community canvassing, or Operation Christmas Child?
- Do you listen to sermons from other godly pastors other than your own?
- Are any of these women or LGBTQ+? (If so, the above answer does not count)
- Do you believe that secular humanism, abortion, and LGBTQ+ people are the number one threat to Christianity?
- If not, are you willing to repent and make it right?
- Do you oppose or criticize God’s anointed leaders? (Whether male pastors or God’s anointed President Donald Trump, the Cyrus of our oppressed age)
- If so, have you rammed a plank so far in your eye you can’t every pluck it out?
- Do you have friendships with those who are non-Christian? (Anyone who is not Evangelical counts.)
- Have you given a gospel presentation to them at least once? (Offering to pray for them may or may not count.)
- Did this presentation include original sin, their horribly lost and depraved soul, their sure destination to eternal perdition, and your remedy of them accepting Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior? (If not, the previous definitely does not count)
- Do you have a passport? (If not, do you realize you are out of the will of God?)
- Have you used it to go to some dejected country like Congo, Honduras, or Canada?
- Did you do so as a part of a mission trip?
- Did you do so from pure motives or because you wanted to “experience the location”?
- Do you believe in protecting the right to bear arms?
- If not, do you realize you are failing to protect your family from criminals, the eventual liberal-socialist take over of the government, and the zombie apocalypse?
Sorry, I got carried away with the list, but I am not done. More to come in the next post.
